Our Policies

Consultation Procedure

  • We believe research methodology is an integral part of a research project or grant proposal. Please contact our center for consultation in the early stage of your research project or grant proposal, as this will enable us to better assist you. For grant proposals, please contact CRMC at least 3 months before the proposal is due. For funded projects, please contact the Center as soon as the award is received.

  • After you request the consultation, please allow the center 5-7 days to contact you and finalize the meeting time. The consultation can take place in person or online, depending on your preference.

  • In the initial consultation meeting, we will discuss the project (e.g., objectives, research design, variables, measures, and data analysis methods, if available), the main purpose of the consultation, the scope of the work involved in the project, the payment and recognition, and agree on how the project will proceed and whether follow-up meetings will be needed.

Rates and Acknowledgement

CRMC can work around your budget and budget resource for all the services. We offer three main payment methods:

  •  A subscription fee paid by participating schools/departments;

  •  A percentage of efforts included in the grant budget;

  •  A service center rate approved by KU Office of Research. Clients can be served by a graduate student who is supervised by faculty or a faculty member at CRMC, depending on your needs, budget, and budget resources.

Rates and Acknowledgement

The consultation of theses and dissertations can be supported through the subscription of the unit with which the student is affiliated*. The request for service must be approved by the advisor of the student. CRMC and the consultant should be acknowledged in the final draft of the thesis or dissertation. When the thesis or dissertation is published, see Publications.

* The Center currently does not have the capacity to work with students whose schools or departments do not subscribe to its services for their theses and dissertations.

The consultation for research projects and publications without funding can be supported through the subscription of the unit with which the faculty or student is affiliated*. If the request is from a student, the advisor of the student should approve the request.

* For faculty and students whose schools or departments do not subscribe to CRMC services, the consultant has the sole discretion to decide if they will work with the client on the research project.

  • For any research products that result from the use of the consultation services of CRMC, an authorship should be provided to the consultant involved in the projects, following the guidelines below. In general, first and subsequent authorship(s) are determined by weighing significant contributions according to the following criteria:

    • Defined the research question

    • Created the research design

    • Made decisions in executing the research design

    • Made decisions in executing the data analyses (as opposed to executing data analyses strictly according to someone else’s plan)

    • Wrote sections of the final paper (with the Discussion section getting more weight than other sections)

    • Intellectual contribution by way of guidance, advice, and direction should be recognized through authorship when such a contribution was significant to the success of the project

  • In the situation that the criteria for the authorship are not met, CRMC and the consultation should be acknowledged in the final publication.

CRMC will provide consultations about research methods, evaluation, or any other relevant parts of a grant proposal. A proposed percentage of the efforts of the consultants should be included in the proposal budget based on the approved service center rate and the agreement between CRMC and the Principal Investigator(s).

CRMC will provide services for any funded projects, including graduate students’ funded thesis/dissertation projects and faculty’s funded research projects. For faculty funded research projects, CRMC can also provide shared graduate research assistants (GRA/RA). When providing services for funded projects, agreements should be made between CRMC, the unit and PI to whom the funding is awarded about the length, scope, and other aspects of the work. The services will be charged based on the approved service center rate.
